T3: Art Deco 1920 - 1939

Art Deco was a popular design movement influencing architecture, interior design, and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts, and film.

The origins of Art Deco lie with a group of French artists who formed an organisation called La Societie des Artistes Decorateurs. The founders included Hector Guimard and in 1925 they organised the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes. This led to the name Art Deco.

This movement was, in a sense, a fusion of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism.

Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, functional, and ultra modern as well.

Art Deco typically involved the use of geometric shapes and the influences from the Egyptian tomb of Tutankhamen. The USA typified Art Deco as glamorous and was embraced by 1920’s Hollywood.
