T3: Post Modern (aka New Design Style) 1978 - present

Postmodernism is a movement of ideas arising from, but also critical of, Modernism. The movement began with architecture, as a reaction against the blandness of the Modernist movement. Post-modernists made a return to decoration and 'interest' in products and buildings. The style came into it’s own during the 1980’s and Post-modernism often incorporated extremely symbolic clues in its work. The 'I Love New York' logo is an example of this, along with its modification after 9/11.

Humour and personality - Products were bright and colourful like children's toys, often including unnecessary decorations.

'Retro' design - Designs that take inspiration from past movements and styles and re-interpret them in a modern way.

Deconstruction - A development in architecture where the surface of a building is distorted so that it becomes non-rectangular. The non-symmetric appearance gives the appearance of controlled chaos.

Frenchman Philippe Starck is probably the best known Post Modern designer.
