T2: Evaluating your design ideas

In order to Synthesise (develop) your design ideas you need to Evaluate their effectiveness. This allows you to select the best parts from all your ideas and combine them together (SCAMPER)to make a better design.

To successfully evaluate your designs you should try to comment on their Strengths, Limitations and Implications in relation to how they compare against your design criteria. Make sure you use appropriate technical vocabulary.

This can be done using either of the following:

1) on your design sheets (see examples on Devise Ideas)

2) on a separate sheet that has smaller scans of your designs (to remind the reader which designs are being evaluated)

The example below shows method 2. To make it even better the student could have put the Criteria number being addressed, in brackets at the end of the sentence.

Design Criteria.

3) The camera should be able to take photos in various lighting conditions.

Evaluative Strength comment:

S - This design incorporates a built in flash that allows the user to take photos in dark environments (C3)
