T2: Devising Ideas (Designing)

Try to get as many design ideas on the page as quickly as possible. Try to create small Isometric sketches like those shown on the Torch example below. The aim is to get as wide a range of ideas as possible (divergent thinking). Number them and add notes explaining why you have chosen to add a particular feature e.g. Corner is rounded to make it safer to use. You might also choose to add (S.L.I) evaluative comments relating to the:

Strengths, Limitations or Implications of your designs (see examples below)

If you add your evaluative comments to your designs instead of on a separate sheet (see Evaluation section), then you should add the criteria number in brackets at the end of the comment e.g.

S - This design incorporates a built in flash that allows the user to take photos in dark environments (C3)

Make use of Isometric grids and ellipse templates. Sketch lightly in pencil and then outline in black technical pen to make your lines stand out. Do not worry about erasing lines you do not use (as long as they are not too heavy!).

You can use 2D and 3D sketches (Isometric) but not just 2D! Use crating to help you.

You can add colour to your designs to make them stand out, but do not do this initially.

Think of designing like writing a story, get your ideas down first and worry about correcting spelling and formatting the text to look good afterwards. Coming up with ideas is the hard part, the formatting is the easy bit! Do the hard bit while your mind is fresh and enhance the visual presentation later when you can relax more (put some music on!).
