Isometric Projection

Isometric drawings are three-dimensional drawings showing three faces of a drawn object.

Designers often use this form of projection for sketching initial ideas as well as for presenting final design solutions.

When an Isometric drawing needs a circle it is added as an Ellipse (see Train Wheels!) Ellipses can be constructed using a Compass or with the aid of an Ellipse Template (see Equipment page)

Isometric drawings are created using 30 degree angles. They can be created using a drawing board and set squares, CADD software or with Underlay Grids (see image below)

Isometric drawings are often 'shaded' to give them a more realistic appearance.

Computer Aided Design and Drafting software (CADD) can be used to create very accurate Isometric shapes.

Isometric Projection is often used to create 'Exploded Drawings'. These drawings are often very accurate and show how an object can be assembled.

Designers will sometimes leave their 'construction lines' visible to show how the drawing was created and indicate how some parts line up.

Subtle highlighting can be used to emphasise certain parts of the drawing.
