Unit 2: Design Brief and Design Criteria

You are to create a single A3 sheet that contains the following information: (300 Word Limit!)

A Design Brief. Describe who the Client is and what they require you to design.

Where will it be located?

Describe the users / customers coming to Xanadu - possible ages, genders, socio-economic status etc.

Consider how specific Principles of Good Design might relate to this type of design.

A Design Criteria Table. Use the information below to help you create and fill in your table.

Remember, when writing your design criteria you only need to consider the areas listed below that are appropriate for this type of design project. You also need to remember that you will be using your design criteria later on to evaluate your designs.

 

Function

What does the Restaurant/Cafe have to offer?

Customer

Who are you aiming this Restaurant at? (this is also known as the Target Market) Age, sex, social type (student, teenager, child, baby, professional, elderly, disabled)

Aesthetics

What does the Restaurant need to look like? How will lighting, materials, colour, shape, tone, texture and layout affect the style of the design. Will the design be based on a theme?

Materials

What should it be made from? Shipping Containers, wood, metal, plastic, glass etc. Sustainable materials?

Environment

Where will it be situated? Is this important? (car & pedestrian access, weather, noise, etc)

Ergonomics

How will people move around the venue safely and easily? Do they need to stand and sit? etc.

Safety

What factors need to be considered to make sure the environment is safe to use? Emergency exits, fire alarms etc.

Environmental Issues

What environmental impact could your design have? How can you minimise this? Can you use recycled materials and converted shipping containers? What other environmental and sustainable issues do you need to consider?

Cost

Is cost a factor? Who will be paying? Is there a budget?

Social/Moral issues

Will the Restaurant be good for Caloundra citizens to use? Will it enhance peoples lives? Will the environment offend anyone in any way?
