External Exam - Design Challenge 25%

Conditions

Unit 4:

Sustainable Design

Topic 2:

Developing a Redesign

Time:

2 Hour + 15 minutes planning

Word Limit:

Four A3 pages

Stimulus:

Unseen

Equipment required:

black ink pen, black fine-liner, 2B pencil. sharpener, eraser, ruler, coloured pencils or Copic markers, tracing paper

You will be given a Question Response Paper

and a Stimulus sheet.

These documents will include:

a description of the features and sustainable requirements of a redesign problem

design criteria that can be used to judge the quality of the design ideas (probably three criteria)

visual and written stimulus to support the design brief.

Your response will need to include:

ideas devised in response to the redesign problem

evaluation of ideas against design criteria to make refinements (use SLI where appropriate)

synthesis of ideas and sustainable information to propose a sustainable design concept

representation of ideas and a sustainable design concept using schematic and/or ideation sketching.

In order to do this successfully you will need to ensure that you address the following Assessment Objectives:

Devising

devise ideas using divergent thinking strategies in response to a redesign problem in the develop phase

Evaluating

evaluate the strengths, limitations and implications (SLI) of ideas against design criteria and make refinements.

Synthesising

synthesise ideas and sustainability information to propose a sustainable design concept in the develop phase

Representing & communicating

represent ideas and a sustainable design concept using schematic sketching and/or ideation sketching in the develop phase

How will your exam be marked?

QCAA will create a specific Assessment Rubric for your external exam. The Rubric will not be available to students or teachers. An example of the Rubric that is publicly available for a school based practice exam is shown right. The Notes section that explains in more detail how marks will be awarded, are specific to this particular problem (the use of Waste Bins in a school). The Rubric that will be used for your exam will be similar, but you will not be aware of what is on the Notes section.

How will you prepare

Ensure you understand the content that is explained on this Portal (Unit 4 Sustainability)

Complete the practice exams and mock exam your teacher will provide you with. (Exam dates are below)

Practice and develop your schematic and ideation sketching skills.

Notes

Max Mark

Devising ideas using divergent thinking in response to a redesign problem

9

shows a wide range of ideas, from more than one point of view, perceptively devised with unique, credible and detailed attributes in response to the problem

9

shows a wide range of ideas, from more than one point of view, purposefully devised with credible and detailed attributes in response to the problem

8

shows a range of ideas, from more than one point of view, purposefully devised with credible and detailed attributes in response to the problem

7

Evaluating ideas and making refinements

6

shows discerning refinement of ideas based on judgments about the critical strengths, limitations and implications of attributes of ideas, using all design criteria

6

shows effective refinement of ideas based on judgments about the logical strengths and limitations of ideas, using all design criteria

5

shows adequate refinement of ideas based on judgments about the feasible strengths and limitations of ideas, using design criteria

4

Synthesising to propose a design concept

7

shows an innovative design concept that

1) includes a coherent and logical combination of attributes of multiple ideas and stimulus information

2) satisfies all design criteria

7

shows an innovative design concept that:

1) includes a logical combination of attributes of multiple ideas and stimulus information

2) satisfies all design criteria

6

shows a credible design concept that:

1) includes a logical combination of ideas and stimulus information

2) satisfies all design criteria

5

Representing ideas and a design concept

6

indicates sophisticated use of:

1) elements and principles of visual communication to differentiate between critical and non-critical attributes in ideation and schematic sketching of ideas and a design concept

2) sequences of related sketches to easily and readily show the progression of understanding of ideas

6

indicates considered use of:

1) elements and principles of visual communication to differentiate between attributes in ideation and schematic sketching of ideas and a design concept

2) sequences of related sketches to show the progression of understanding of ideas

5

indicates appropriate use of ideation and schematic sketching of ideas and a design concept with labels and either 1 of the following

1) elements and principles of visual communication to differentiate between attributes

OR

2) sketches to show the progression of understanding of ideas
