Designers develop and communicate their ideas using sketching (sometimes called ideation).
There are many ways that designs can be sketched but one of the main systems is called Isometric projection.
Isometric sketches are often created with the aid of underlay grids that help you to construct drawings with the correct proportions and angles.
Sometimes light boards also help with this process.
Crating is used to help sketch complex shapes by drawing the elements of them within 'crates'.
To make design sketches look more realistic we want to render them. Another name for rendering is tonal shading. Rendering can be done with coloured pencils, markers (Copic etc) or through digital means - software such as Adobe Photoshop.
When working digitally, designers often use input devices such as Wacom Tablets, that allow them to use a stylus (digital pen)
The task sheets to the right will provide you with the opportunity to develop your sketching and rendering skills. Your teacher will demonstrate how to do each task. |
