Example of an authentic Human Centred Design problem

Mr Morgan often has to pick up his daughter from work. When he waits for her in the car he likes to watch Netflix on his phone. Holding the phone in his hands is not very comfortable so he would ideally like some type of phone holder. He has looked on the internet but he cannot find a suitable product to buy.

Mr Morgan sketched some ideas and then used CAD software and a 3D printer to create a prototype of his best idea.

Although the prototype fitted nicely onto the steering wheel the phone was on too steep an angle. This caused some reflection on the screen.

The lip at the bottom of the holder was also a bit high and obscurred the very bottom of the phone screen.

The design was synthesised by adding an additional component to alter the angle of the phone screen.

Mr Morgan also decided that there was no need to have a 'lip' on the bottom of the holder because the angle of the holder should ensure that the phone stays in place.

The final version worked well.
